How to prepare

Preparing Kwath (Kashayam), involves boiling a specific quantity of dried, coarsely powdered herbs in water to extract their medicinal properties. Here's a simplified process:
  1. Measure out the herb in a dry, coarse powder form. Use a teaspoon of herb in 100ml of water.
  2. Boil this mixture in a pan made of iron or steel, which allows quick evaporation. Keep the vessel uncovered to allow the water to reduce to half.
  3. Continuously stir the mixture to prevent the herbs from settling and getting burned.
  4. Once boiling starts, maintain a mild fire to keep the water at around 90 degrees Celsius, preventing damage to the plant's chemicals.
  5. Filter the decoction and use it while it's fresh and mildly hot. You can also ass honey or gud (jaggery) to the tea to make it sweet and tasty.
To enhance the effectiveness and the absorption of quad add herbal powders like Cumin, Guggulu, Kshara, Salt, Shilajit, Asafoetida, Ginger, Black Pepper, and Long Pepper, they help facilitate quicker absorption of the beneficial elements in the herbs.
Note: For some herbs, overnight soaking in water is recommended to ease the extraction process, especially for bulk preparation. However, certain herbs like fresh Brahmi, Bhringaraja, or Shatavari may spoil if soaked overnight, so it's best to use them directly.

Dosage:

  • Traditional Kwaths are consumed in doses ranging from 50 to 100 ml daily, divided into smaller amounts.
  • Concentrated Kwaths available on the market are taken in doses of 10-20 mL, mixed with equal parts water.
  • The best time to take Kashaya is after digestion, though this can vary depending on the health issue being addressed.
  • Kashayams may be consumed before or after meals, depending on their effectiveness and the individual's digestion.
